    I. Purpose:

    The Special Education teacher is to help manage educational programs and activities that are provided to emotionally and learning challenged students served by the Abbott House.

    II. Qualifications:

    A. Bachelor’s Degree

    B. South Dakota Special Education Teacher endorsement.

    C. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

    D. Experience and training in work with troubled students.

    E. Ability to effectively interact with sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural differences in the client population.

    III. Responsible To: Special Education Director

    IV. Hours and Schedule: 40 hour week; 12 month school calendar

    V. Principal Accountabilities

    A. Establish and maintain a therapeutic milieu within the classroom that is responsive to individual and collective student needs and promotes learning of socially acceptable behaviors.

    B. Assess academic abilities of each student; develop and implement effective curricula to meet identified educational needs and goals in accordance with South Dakota guidelines. Supervise the completion of IEPs and lesson plans in a thorough and timely manner.

    C. Work cooperatively with teachers and other positions within the Program in developing and implementing individualized treatment planning.

    D. Participate in treatment team and staff meetings whenever possible. Submit reports and documentation in a timely manner.

    E. Enable parents and other significant adults to become constructively involved in each student’s educational/treatment plan.

    F. Maintain thorough and timely documentation of student attendance, classroom behavior, significant incidents, and academic progress. Assure timely and accurate communication of information regarding student functioning.

    G. Provide continuity and progress of the student’s grade placement status with home school districts through maintenance of credits and provision of required academic courses. Maintain cooperative and coordinated programs with local public school districts, including regular contact with teachers and administrators.

    H. Provide for the safety and well-being of the students through the appropriate use of discipline, crisis intervention, knowledge, and supervision of all students during school hours.
