Christian New and his wife, Kendall Kennedy, are settling into life in Mitchell with their pets, a cat named Poki and a dog named Emma. The couple’s story began years ago. They had known each other since high school, began dating during college, and in April of 2025, they celebrated their marriage.

Christian’s journey to Mitchell started in Houston, Texas, his hometown. His path north was shaped by a deep passion for archaeology. When his mother moved to Mitchell in the fall of 2021, Christian visited the following summer and toured the Mitchell Prehistoric Archaeological Site. Captivated by the work being done there, he returned in 2023 to join a dig and lead tours. After finishing his master’s degree back in Houston, he returned once more, this time as Assistant Director. Today, he proudly serves as Executive Director of the museum.

His first impressions of Mitchell were filled with warmth and charm. He describes it as a cozy small town with plenty of amenities to keep life engaging, and as someone who thrives outdoors, he immediately appreciated the abundance of public outdoor spaces. The greatest challenge, he admits, was being away from friends and family in Houston. Fortunately, they visit often and have come to love the community just as much as he has.

Now firmly rooted, Christian has grown fond of Mitchell’s weather, outdoor spaces, and especially its people. His work has connected him with many community members, and his involvement continues to grow. He is an active member of Rotary and looks forward to participating in even more local events during the museum’s offseason. When it comes to local dining, he and Kendall often head to Bradley’s or Puerto Vallarta for their favorite meals.

Outside of work, Christian finds joy in creating music, writing, cooking, biking, and gardening, while also cherishing time with his family and pets. Mitchell has even introduced him to new passions, disc golf among them, thanks to the city’s well-kept courses. While many of his activities still revolve around the Mitchell Site, he is excited about future volunteer opportunities in the community.

Christian’s career in archaeology was the guiding force behind his move to Mitchell. With both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology, his role at the Mitchell Site perfectly aligns with his expertise and passion. Since taking over as Executive Director, he has overseen several milestones. The museum underwent a name change, initiated technology and visitor interface updates, hosted a series of successful events, and expanded its school tour program, now offering free tours to any school eager to visit.

When asked about favorite places in town, Christian doesn’t hesitate to name the Mitchell Site, the walking and biking trails around the lake, and Palace City Brewing Co. He recommends that newcomers and visitors make time for First Fridays, which he describes as always a blast, and he insists the Mitchell Site itself is a must-see.

Looking back on his move, Christian advises others to fully explore everything Mitchell has to offer. The community is friendly and quick to share its local gems. While he is preparing himself for his first South Dakota winter, he welcomes the season with enthusiasm, noting his love for skiing and a chance to enjoy some semi-hibernation.

As he considers the future, Christian hopes to see continued efforts in beautifying downtown, particularly around the Corn Palace and extending north along Main Street. For now, though, he is grateful for his new life in Mitchell. “Mitchell is a warm, welcoming community with so much to offer,” he says. “I’m excited to grow here, both personally and professionally.”
